THE CLIENT CHANGED THEIR MIND? NO ONE SHOT YOUR ELEMENTS?

IT’S YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! AN ALL-NEW FLAME CHALLENGE!

Every Flame Artist has been in this situation 1,000 times:

You walk into work, coffee in hand, expecting to start on a two-day long project involving people shot on green screen and a few phone screens comps. You sent the production company clear instructions on how you want the green screen shot and what kind of tracking marks you want on the phones. Then, your Producer gets an email from the client:

“Good morning! Here’s the final, approved rough cut. Well, it’s almost final and mostly approved. Couple of things came up in the edit. Unfortunately, it was too windy to use the green screens we rented, but the grass is green, so that should help, right? Not a total loss, though. We ended up cutting the green screen into small pieces and taped them to the phone screens. Someone from the art department said that would be better than the screen off with those little markers you gave us. Were they right? By the way, the sky in the wide shots was GORGEOUS! But late in the day we got a new script and had to reshoot. The clouds had rolled in by then…not a problem, right? Oh, and in order to get the client to sign off on the rough cut we had to combine two performance takes. Not exactly a head transplant - the editor mocked it up in Premiere and you can barely see it, except for the part where his neck meets his collar.” And now for the good news - we’re still good to ship in two days!”

This is usually when you look at your Producer and say:

YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

As Flame Artists, we face challenges like this every day. Fortunately, we have the best tool in the world…FLAME!

THE CHALLENGE:

We have two spots for you to choose from. We have all of the original, ungraded footage, an XML and a few stock elements. All you need to do is come up with a classic You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me scenario, and then use all of your Flame skills to bring it to life!

If these spots look familiar, it’s becuase they have been a part of nearly every Flame demo from the past several years. A huge thank you to Autodesk for providing them!

Next, finish the following statement: “We were hired to do a commercial about ________________________________. But the client changed their mind! Now they want the commercial to be about _____________________________________!”

For example:  “We were hired to do a commercial about a man and a woman who find a UFO crash while they are on a walk. But the client changed their mind! Now they want the commercial to be about a man and a woman who find a family of dinosaurs while they are on a walk!” or a man and a woman who are walking on the moon! Or the beach! Or the seasons need to change as the spot progresses! Or turn into aliens! Where you go is up to you. The spot needs to be conformed, graded and then the statement above needs to be realized. Use all of your Flame skills to bring your vision to life!

We have everything you’ll need to get started:

  • The ungraded source footage

  • XML of the cut

  • Some of the additional elements (CG passes, etc) used in “Did You See That?” and “Future Track”

  • Some free stock VFX clips provided by ActionVFX.com. ActionVFX.com has a whole collection of FREE VFX elements and sound effects that you can download from their site! (ActionVFX.com registration required)

THE RULES!

YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING:

  • Choose one of the provided spots, either “Did You See That” or “Future Track”.

  • Finish the following statement: “We were supposed to work on a spot about ______________________, but then the client changed their mind, and now they want the spot to be about _________________________________.” This “mission statement” must be submitted with your entry.

  • Download the provided elements, and use all of your Flame skills to produce the best final product. Download links will be provided when you register.

  • All compositing work must be done in Flame. This includes but is not limited to: Conforming, Compositing, Color Grading, Roto, Paint, Retouch, etc. In other words, the only app you can use to manipulate the images in this project is Flame.

  • No pre-rendered CG assets. You can bring in 3D models from other sources, including stock models. They can include embedded textures and animation. All rendering must be done in Flame.

  • About Stock Footage and Images: We’ve provided some fantastic stock clips, courtesy of ActionVFX.com. They have even more free video and sound effects that you can download from their site (registration on their site is required). If you use other stock elements, it is up to you to obtain the necessary rights. You will need to provide a list of all of the stock elements used with your submission.

  • You will need to submit two .mov files of your project: A 1920x1080 h.264 and a 1920x1080 Prores 422HQ.

  • You will also need to submit a Flame archive. Please do everything you can to make the archive as small as possible. For example, preserve the folder structure of the elements that we provide and import them as links. For the archive you submit, please delete unused media, delete unnecessary Batch iterations, consolidate all handles, etc. Also un-render your timeline and unlink the original source media for the provided footage and free stock clips from ActionVFX.com. Here is an example of how you should set up your folders:
